I found this site today. I'm always skeptical about such things as this because I'm afraid they will just run off with my money. Yes, I'm paranoid. But I'm not going to donate to them... just in case. =)
Some of our American Lit reading for Tuesday was on William Apess. He was an American Indian who lived in the 1700s-1800s, and who cries out against the injustices done to his people by the English. I loved the way he writes because... well, read for yourself in his "An Indian's Looking-Glass for the White Man."
If black or red skins or any other skin of color is disgraceful to God, it appears that he has disgraced himself a great deal- for he has made fifteen colored people to one white and placed them here upon this earth... Or have you the folly to think that the white man, being one in fifteen or sixteen, are the only beloved images of God?...I will refer you to St. Peter's precepts (Acts 10) (I think he meant Luke..?): "God is no respecter of persons," etc. Now if this is the case, my white brother, what better are you than God?... By what you read, you may learn how deep your principles are. I should say they were skin-deep.
Heavens, I love it. He's so blunt!
I love the American Lit class, but I would be a terrible Lit/English major. I simply cannot analyze works. I read the assigned articles, and come in with a dramatically different viewpoint than my prof and the rest of the class, which is chock-full of upper-class English majors. Yikes. But I like reading (most) the works. It has definitely expanded my knowledge so far.
I greatly enjoyed this quote from my Exploring Social Psychology book by David G. Myers:
True humility is more like self-forgetfulness than false modesty. (p. 41)
From the same book, here's a crazy quote:
What good fortune for those in power that people do not think.- Adolf Hitler (p. 71)
Well, that's all for now. The first stats exam is tomorrow. Hopefully I will do well. I just need to be careful in remembering to take the square root, which I always forget to do, and to remember the order of operations. Some of them are confusing...
There are a couple girls in my class who I feel really sorry for right now. They are going to die. They don't read the book, they don't listen in lecture, and they don't understand what's going on. They always want me to help them during (yes, during) lecture. I don't because then I wouldn't know the present day's lecture to explain to them next time. If they want help after class, I'm more than willing to help them, but not during, for Pete's sake! One girl in particular is barely keeping up. I thought, "Oh, she must be giving priority to her other classes, and letting this one slide a little." Well, we are in 2 other classes together, and does she read for those? Nope. I don't understand. Yes, we all get behind once in awhile, but in every class? I don't think so. Anyway, that was my little rant for the day. =)
Happy Monday!!

I did. I think... =)
Of course, I didn't write down the computational formula for variance, but DON'T WORRY! I made it up.
I LOVE that 'true humility' quote, and think I'll borrow it for my newsletter. ~ Beck's Mom ~
You're right, my life is wonderfully exciting.

Well. That's rude.
Ha, I had forgotten that was even on my away message. No wonder than comment didn't make any sense...
