An OK Weekend

Friday night, Janelle and I did homework. Yeah, we're lots of fun. We did end up watching a move, Miracle, which reminded me yet again how much I LOVE hockey!! I miss it! I don't feel too terribly bad about missing most the season because they didn't have one this year. The players went on strike over wage ceilings or something. Whatever. Hopefully they'll be back next year. I think that is my favorite sports to watch (outside of USC football). Go, Kings, Ducks, and Avs!! =)

Saturday, I was good and wrote a paper a whole week before it was due. Go me!! I think that's all the homework I ended up doing. I should have done more. I did something fun last night, which is nice because Friday night was really boring. We went over to Annette's room and painted our nails while we watched a movie. We watched Maverick, a western with Mel Gibson, Jody Foster, and... oh good heavens, what is his name?... ah, James Garner. Gotta love James Garner. Hilarious movie, but with more swearing than my family would like. So my family, don't watch it. Even though it was good. Oh, and there were a couple scenes that didn't show too much, but you got the idea...

Because Sarah, Janelle, Annette and I don't have cars, we bummed a ride off Jeanette this morning to go to church, as did Brandon. We went to Little Country Church (it is not little!), which is affiliated with Calvary Chapel, Costa Mesa. The pastor was good overall, but there were a few things I disagreed with (I will get to that later). We went to the late service which starts at 11:30, so it got out at about 1:00. For me, that is really late to be starting my homework, so I knew I needed to book it once I got back to school. Well, Brandon wanted to go out to lunch because the caf food tends to be revolting on weekends, so we happily headed off to AppleBee's. We finished eating around 2:30, meaning I had killed most my day for homework. However, Sarah and I still needed to go to Wal*Mart for some odds and ends, so we dropped everyone who didn't want to go back off at school, and proceeded to the store. We got back to school at 4:00. So much for getting anything done! I read my cognitive psych chapter and picked the topic I'm going to give my presentation on, but that's about all I did today. And I have SO much more to do. Needless to say, I am now stressed and panicking. I will go to bed soon, and it will be ok... at least until tomorrow morning.

So the pastor's sermon. Of course, I went on the interesting week, when he spoke on wives submitting to their husbands (Ephesians 5:15-21). I don't know what it is with pastors these days, but it sure takes a long time for them to get to the point. Anyway, he said a bunch of stuff that I didn't think was totally relevant, or maybe he just wanted to pull in some Biblical history to make it sound better. At any rate, the interesting part follows. *ahem*
The word "submit" in these verses is a military word meaning "under rank." Thus, this is not an issue of equality, but of order. God put the woman under man for order, not dominance. The pastor described the home as a battle ground (??), so God put someone in charge to keep order- that someone is man. So that's were the pastor is coming from.
Here's where I disagree, but maybe I'm just nit-picking.
He said that women tend to think with their heart, whereas men tend to think with their head (a good generalization). HOWEVER! He totally discounted thinking with your heart. I believe that IN GENERAL, men tend to completely miss the emotional part of things, and IN GENERAL, women can be too emotionally involved in situations. I think it is good to lead/think with your head, but not to totally reject the emotional part of it. I'm not sure if this is a good example, but this is what came to mind.
My dad coaches the 12 & under girls basketball team, and he has coached the freshman girls team as well. He sometimes doesn't realize when the girls are getting upset and emotional, and he keeps pushing them. My mom has gone up to him and told him to back off- if he keeps pushing, the girl is going to fall apart. (In his defense, he is pretty good at recognizing when to stop, but this scenario has happened occasionally.) I think a balance of both the emotional perspective and the "just the facts, ma'am, just the facts" perspective is needed. (Oh, goodness. I just quoted an ancient TV show. I'm turning into my father!!!!!)
To conclude this ramble which I hope is understandable, I was just peeved that the pastor thought that the emotional side of things was not relevant.
Along the lines of establishing order, the pastor also mentioned that God has given the title of senior pastor to some so that order is in place in the church. Now, I'm going to look it up in the Bible tonight, but I don't recall a title of senior pastor, or a single leader in each church.

Anyway, hopefully that all made sense, and I'm at least kind of on track. Next week is husbands loving their wives- I am so going!!! =)

ha ha. i was going to make the same senior pastor objection the second i saw 'senior pastor' but you beat me to it. i'd ask him, "and what are your verses, exactly, for God's appointing a 'senior pastor'?"

Yeah any analogy where the home is compared to a battleground probably isn't real sound...
