One final down, two to go. OT was this morning. Oh man. What a horrible way to end the year. I did not study the right things. Last test, I read the prof pretty well and was able to study only what he put on the exam. Not so this time. Hopefully the essay will pull my grade up. And that I guessed well. Hehe. Janelle and I enthusiastically popped our balloons that we made- one for each final. Tilde smashed hers in the door. Poor balloons. They take the brunt of our frustrations. Janelle has 3 finals today, back to back. She's usually done within the allotted time, but still. That's a lot! Everyone here has the option of moving a final to a different day if they have more than 2, but she wants to get them over with Apparently statistics is easy (???), so she's blazing ahead. She doesn't have any more until Thursday.
Ok, like you cared about any of that, but whatever.
Another cause of excitement: I found out exactly what trisomy 18 is!! During a normal meiosis, the following happens:
1) S of interphase-- chromosomes duplicate, making 2 chromatids per chromosome.
2) Homologous chromosomes pair off.
3) The cell splits into 2, one cell bearing a homologous pair.
4) The cells split again; this time, the chromatids split apart.
Now there are 4 gametes (sex cells).
In trisomy, when the cell splits into 2 cells (step 3 above), both chromosomes go into one cell. The end result is 2 chromatids in a gamete. When another gamete meets it, there will be 3 copies of the same chromatid.
Another possibility is that the chromosomes split, but the chromatids did not.
I love biology!! That section was so fun! I wasn't too keen on the animal/plant stuff, but the mitosis/meiosis/cell stuff was fun.
"And what is a plasma membrane made out of?"
"A phospholipid bilayer with proteins embedded in it!"
I think I will remember that phrase the rest of my life. I also found out what all the A/B/O blood type stuff is all about. A, B, and O represent the glycoproteins on the red blood cells! Well, A and B do. O types don't have glycoproteins. I'm excited for human bio next semester. =)
So my week's schedule isn't too bad. Tonight, there is a bio review, Jessica (the RD) is hosting a party, we go out to dinner for work tomorrow night, Wednesday morning is bio final, Mom comes Wednesday night, World Civ final Thursday morning, then I leave for home! I might take the World Civ final tomorrow if I'm prepared enough (there are two final sessions, you can go to which ever you choose). We'll see.
Well, I'm going to pack a little bit more, and go running. Then study time!! Have a good week, all.

I knew you'd come around to see the truth eventually, Steph. Biology is the best!
With your new-found knowledge (most of which I never even learned) about blood types, maybe you should hang around to explain them to my Bio students. :)
They'll be pricking themselves and determining their blood type the session after Beck's wedding.

We learned about blood types in forensic science. Mrs W. gave us a sheet with seven different families different blood types(e.g. A, AB, B, BB, O, OB) and we were to determine whether the child they gave us to look at was legitimate or not. Hopefully that made some sort of sense. It was fun, but it was sort of challenging.

Sadly, there is no such thing as OB. O type blood simply means there are no glycolipids (not glycoproteins as I said in my post). Since there are no glycolipids, there cannot be an OB blood type. It is simply B type.
